Modern Chinese build vessels have replaced most of the old 'steamers' from the British Irawaddy Flotilla. However on minor routes many of those old 'steamers' are still in service. Converted to use diesel engines they transport passengers and goods between many destinations. The cabin in the front section of the upper deck houses the first class, a shadow of its heydays. It contains a few wooden chairs and a table in a otherwise empty cabin these days and has a squat toilet attached for use of first class passengers only. Underneath the first class cabin is the wheel house. Deck class passengers are assigned a narrow space on the upper or lower deck. Often a few deck chairs can be rented from the staff at additional cost but mats have to be brought by the passengers. A small canteen aboard usually serves some simple curries and coffee and sometimes beer on longer routes.
